Media Frames Reality
It is easy to forget that the news platforms we depend on for objective reporting are anything but. Owned, edited, curated, reported, and written by numerous individuals working as the singular unit of "news", every story that hits the public eye includes varying degrees of bias (intentional and unintentional) and assumptions. More than anything, the images that accompany these stories are also picked and placed by individuals that internalize said biases, which influences their editing decisions. Absorbing those images constantly as our "objective" news influences a generalized understanding of certain people and events.
This case study observes the way in which images in the news informed the discussion of race relations at the time. What assumptions do these images hold or perpetuate? What sort of narrative is backed by these images? How do they connect to a broader understanding of white supremacy or racial triangulation?
