Front Page Observations
First front page photo not dedicated to destruction. Displays what the editors categorize as a "peaceful rally" held in Koreatown, observed by National Guardsmen. Alongside this image is the title of a column: "U.S. Racial Slumber Ends in Jolt" that refers to "urban tension" that has been ignored, and the need to "resume the efforts at equality begun in the '60s". It is unclear what exactly "urban tension" refers to: tension in urban cities? And tensions between whom? Why is tension specifically in urban spaces? What does the word urban imply?
It is unique that such a large protest of Koreans (now identifying as Korean-American) waving the South Korean flag is highlighted in the front page. What effect is this supposed to have on the viewer? What was the importance of emphasizing the rise of Koreans during / after the riots?
The proximity of the column on racial slumber and urban tensions with this image seems to imply that much of that tension involves Korean-Americans. It could play a role in developing the Black-Korean conflict narrative.
